  18. Description of Working Group:
  19. This Working Group is chartered to consider technical contributions to
  20. the SNMP evolution process and to produce a single recommendation as
  21. to which contributions (or combinations or modifications thereof)
  22. should define the next generation SNMP network management framework.
  23.  
  24. The announced deadline for technical contributions to the SNMP
  25. evolution process is September 10, 1992. Any individual interested in
  26. contributing to this process should prepare and submit his/her
  27. contribution according to the requirements for detail, completeness,
  28. copyright, and format set forth in the original announcement. This
  29. Working Group is under no obligation to consider contributions that do
  30. not meet these basic requirements or contributions that are not
  31. submitted by the contribution deadline.

  33. This Working Group has the option of (a) rejecting any or all
  34. contributions as the basis for positive evolution, (b) accepting any
  35. or all contributions as candidates for standardization, or (c)
  36. modifying or combining any or all contributions to produce consensus
  37. proposals for standardization.

  39. The product of the Working Group will be a single recommendation to
  40. the IESG identifying those submitted specifications (or modifications
  41. thereof), if any, whose standardization as part of the SNMP framework
  42. is agreed to be warranted and desirable.  The Working Group will not
  43. be chartered to produce tutorial, explanatory, advisory, or
  44. informational documents of any kind.
  45.  
  46. In its deliberations, the Working Group will take special cognizance
  47. of architectural principles on which the historic success of SNMP has
  48. rested:
  49.  
  50. (1) The SNMP framework minimizes the overall cost of a manageable
  51. network by minimizing the cost and complexity of those management
  52. system components that are most numerous.
  53.  
  54. (2) The SNMP framework fosters ubiquity of deployment by admitting the
  55. widest possible range of implementation strategies.
  56.  
  57. (3) The SNMP framework fosters operational robustness by realizing
  58. management system function as closely as possible to centers of
  59. responsible authority.
  60.  
  61. (4) The SNMP framework fosters operational robustness by locating
  62. control of resources consumed by the management activity (e.g.,
  63. bandwidth, processing) as closely as possible to centers of
  64. responsible authority.

  66. Moreover, the deliberations of the Working Group will take special
  67. cognizance of at least two aspects of evolutionary logistics:
  68.  
  69. (1) A single transition from existing SNMP technology to the next
  70. stage of SNMP evolution is highly desirable; multi-stage or protracted
  71. transitions are less desirable.
  72.  
  73. (2) Minimizing the number of distinct management technologies
  74. concurrently deployed in the Internet is highly desirable.
  75.  
  76. Consistent with the community desire for timely, deliberate progress,
  77. the Working Group may be disbanded at the time of the IETF plenary
  78. meeting in the Spring of 1993 regardless of whether or not it has
  79. produced the single recommendation required by its Charter.

  81. This Working Group is not chartered to consider security aspects of
  82. the SNMP framework, as these are addressed as a matter of course by an
  83. existing IETF working group.
